Oneworld’s New CEO Wants Miles Posted Faster and Benefits Recognized Everywhere

What should the oneworld logo guarantee when a trip crosses several airlines? Status recognition and lounge access are expected, but business travelers want boarding passes that update automatically, miles posted quickly, usable upgrades and help when plans unravel.
In an interview with Business Traveler at the IATA AGM in Rio de Janeiro, oneworld CEO Ole Orvér acknowledges that the alliance has gaps between what it promises and what members consistently deliver.
His priority is “fixing the basics”: removing the exceptions that make benefits work on one carrier but fail on another. That requires technology, revised commercial policies and cooperation among airline employees.
Orvér discusses plans to expand oneworld’s branded lounge portfolio beyond Amsterdam and Seoul, create an alliance-wide upgrade program and improve digital integration across member networks. Yet one strategic hole remains difficult to ignore: six years after LATAM left, oneworld has no South American member.
Can the alliance restore its strength in Latin America while integrating new airlines across the Pacific? And can it become a reliable extension of a traveler’s preferred carrier? We examine Orvér’s plan to make oneworld more consistent, useful and valuable worldwide.
